Workshop 2 "Reciprocity principles and their practical relevance for guided wave applications"
Thursday, 27 March 2025
parallel to the lecture programme
The reciprocity principle in active ultrasonic testing describes the preservation of the system response during certain swapping operations of the transmitter and receiver, which are coupled to a specimen under test. This principle is usually viewed as a curious theoretical concept and its possibilities and limitations in practice are only incompletely understood. In the workshop, two or more competing teams will use various puzzle tasks to find out what the reciprocity principle actually means, in which situations it applies or does not apply and how it can specifically help to plan and carry out more effective experiments and numerical simulations. Applications of guided waves with conventional ultrasonic transducers, but also contactless methods using laser ultrasound, serve as examples for discussion.
